An adventurous tour of Africa with the Gazette

November 15, 2023

In mid-July, Joan Oeffner of Lewes packed her 21-inch duffle bag for her 16-day tour of Africa.  The countries visited were South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. There was plenty of viewing of the wildlife in the bush during the nine game drives.  The five cruises on the Chobe, Zambesi, and Okavango rivers provided up close and personal views of the elephants, buffalo, and other wildlife that hovered near the shores or in the rivers. Highlights of the trip included viewing the magnificent Victoria Falls, touring two contrasting cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg, and getting drenched while at Cape Point, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet at the southern tip of Africa. Her favorites were the times spent in the Chobe National Park and on the Okavango Delta. Joan is shown here at the entrance of  Elephant Valley Lodge in Chobe National Park, where she called a luxurious tent her home for two nights!  Of course, she read her Cape Gazette while listening to the calls of the wild.
