Bayhealth honored for organ and tissue donation advocacy

February 20, 2024

Bayhealth has been honored with a silver recognition from the Health Resources and Services Administration for exceptional dedication to promoting organ and tissue donation and transplantation. The recognition was presented by representatives from the Gift of Life Donor Program, a nonprofit organization committed to saving lives through organ and tissue donation.

The HRSA’s DoNation Campaign recognizes hospitals for their engagement in advocating for donation, supporting donor families and providing care to patients awaiting life-saving transplants. Bayhealth leaders have been instrumental in championing this cause, actively participating in routine council meetings, organizing education sessions for the healthcare team and implementing innovative programs such as the Honor Walk program, which Bayhealth was the first in the region to introduce.

Bayhealth’s commitment to raising awareness and fostering a culture of donation has resulted in significant outcomes over the past year. Bayhealth Sussex and Kent campuses combined their efforts to support 17 organ donors and their families, leading to an impressive 50 life-saving organ transplants in 2023.

“It's an honor to be recognized for our commitment to promoting organ and tissue donation and transplant through Gift of Life,” said Sarah Adams, BSN, RN, CCRN, senior nurse manager . “Advocating for organ and tissue donation while supporting our donor patients and their families is an incredible opportunity for us to positively impact the well-being of our community. It is a rewarding outcome to tragic situations, and we're proud to be a part of that.”

Bayhealth's partnership with Gift of Life Donor Program has not only saved lives, but also provided hope to countless individuals awaiting organ transplants. The silver recognition serves as a reminder of Bayhealth's ongoing commitment to improving the health and well-being of the community through exceptional care and advocacy.
