Former Milton Mayor Jack Bushey and Planning and Zoning Commissioner George Cardwell were given the two highest honors for Milton residents when they were presented with the Lifetime Volunteer and Citizen of the Year awards April 1.

Award recipients are nominated by fellow citizens in honor of their work serving the community.

Bushey, who grew up in Milton, has been doing volunteer service in Milton for 50 years, having first joined the Milton Fire Department in 1968. He has served as the department’s president, ambulance captain and secretary over his long career. Bushey was elected to Milton Town Council in 1973 and served until 1991. In 1996, he was elected mayor and served in that capacity until 2006. Bushey later served as chair of the streets and sidewalks, water, and parks and recreation committees. He has also served as president of Milton Historical Society.

Mayor John Collier said, “When it comes to the concept of lifetime volunteer, no one fills the title better than John F. Bushey.”

Upon receiving the award, Bushey thanked the citizens who nominated him.

Meanwhile, Cardwell was recognized as Citizen of the Year for his service on numerous town committees, including planning and zoning, streets and sidewalks, and the board of elections. He also took part in working with the state on establishing a transportation improvement district within Milton.

Collier said, “George’s innovative thinking and willingness to collaborate with diverse groups demonstrate his leadership qualities. His integrity and ethical standards are widely recognized, and contribute to his reputation as a trustworthy and respected member of the community.”
