Cape baseball downs Dover, Appo

April 8, 2024

Lights-out pitching, timely hits and stolen bases led the Vikings to a 5-1 win over Dover and a 10-0 shutout of Appoquinimink. The Vikings are 6-0 on the season.

Jaxon Clampitt hurled a three-hit six innings and Jacob Smith shut down the seventh with three strikeouts April 4 at Chris Short Field.

“Against Dover, we left a lot of runners on base,” said Cape head coach Ben Evick. “We were able to take the lead in the fourth and then put it away in the sixth. Their pitcher did a good job keeping us off balance, and we hit some balls right at people. Jaxon Clampitt did a really nice job on the mound getting ahead of hitters and getting outs quick.”

Isaac Terhune went 2-for-3 and knocked in a run in the game. He also stole four bases from the Senators. Trey Hitchcock, Brady Kosc and Aaden Johnson each slammed an RBI. Clampitt powered a double in the bottom of the sixth.

“After I stole the first base, I had my read down on the pitcher,” said Terhune. ”I watch for pitchers’ delivery speed to the plate, how quick their windup is, how often they check runners and how long they sit on the mound before they start their windup.”

The Vikings battled tough, windy conditions and chilly weather, but it didn’t cool off their bats as they racked up 12 hits to put a six-inning 10-0 score in the book against Appo April 6.

Junior transfer Brad Marks picked up his third win of the season with a one-hitter while sitting down nine Jags with a K. Reed Thompson came in from the bullpen in the sixth inning to put down the Jags.

Junior Jase Mitchell went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs. Clampitt went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Lex Wescott, Hitchcock, Kosc and Malachi Woods each knocked in a run.

Kosc, Chase Resnick, Gage Joseph, Mitchell, Wescott and Hitchcock each had a stolen base.

“Today we hit very well in tough conditions,” said Evick. “We told the guys before the game we need to drive the ball to the back side, because the wind was killing everything. We strung multiple hits together to put runs on the board. Jase Mitchell had a nice day at the plate including a triple. Brad Marks continued to be very tough to hit on the mound. He got ahead in counts and kept their hitters off balance.”

“We need to continue to hit like we have been,” said Terhune. “Having quality at-bats and seeing lots of pitches is really helping us run up pitch counts and get through teams’ aces quickly. We need to own the pace of play with stealing bases, being ready to hit, and the speed of our defense and pitchers. Being able to score runners on base instead of leaving them stranded helps a lot.”

The Vikings will host Indian River Tuesday, April 9, and Caravel Wednesday, April 10.
