Cape lacrosse girls now 4-0 with wins over Kent Island and Marriotts Ridge

Friday showdown with unbeaten Seahawks on the horizon

Cape girls’ lacrosse front-loaded the schedule with Maryland schools, starting the season with an 8-7 home win over  Broadneck in the final seconds on a feed from Lindsay D’Ambrogi to Lulu Rishko. The Vikings followed that drama with dominating wins over Queen Anne’s County 14-2, Kent Island 16-5 and Marriotts Ridge 13-6. 

A showdown is about to go down Friday, April 12, at Champions Stadium as the undefeated Vikings will host undefeated Sussex Academy. The Seahawks beat defending state champion Tatnall 12-9  April  6.

Cape was set to play at Polytech April 8 and will travel to Dover Wednesday, April 10, while Sussex Academy played at Indian River April 8 and will be at Sussex Tech Tuesday, April 9.

Cape played back-to-back games on the turf at Kent Island High last weekend, beating Kent Island Friday night, 16-5, then battling Marriotts Ridge Saturday morning, coasting to a 13-6 victory in a game the Vikings led 8-1 at the end of the first quarter.  

The storyline and stat-line for the 13-6 win over Marriotts Ridge April 6 saw five players with two goals each, including Lindsay D’Ambrogi (3 assists), Claire Lopez (3 assists), Haley Gamuciello (1 assist), Mairead Rishko and Macy Steinwedel. Single goals were scored by Lulu Rishko (1 assist), Avary Miller and Ally Diehl. 

Assist makers were Grace Wiggins and Carrie Clausius 2, and Anna Sullivan 1. 

Goals by Marriotts Ridge included Jenna Cratin and Rachel Harper each with 2, and single goals from Katie Leader and Esther Yang.

Anna Lopez had nine saves in goal.

Eleven different players scored and 11 goals were assisted in Cape’s 16-5 victory over Kent Island April 5.  Goalie saves were Anna Lopez with 3 and Abby Schaeffer 2. 

Goal scorers for Cape were Carrie Clausius with 3 (1 assist), and Claire Lopez (2 assists), Grace Wiggins (1 assist) and Haley Gamuciello with 2 each. Single goals were scored by Lindsay D’Ambrogi (1 assist), Lulu Rishko (2 assists), Macy Steinwedel (1 assist), Ally Diehl (1 assist), Mairead Rishko, Amara Fruchtman and Lina Frederick. 

 Olivia Burkentine and Avary Miller each also had an assist. 

“This was a challenging start to the season for us, playing tough competition early. It was great to be tested, and we have already seen a ton of growth from game one to now,” said Cape head coach Lindsey Underwood. “The girls have been working hard and are extremely focused on their goals. This is a long haul for us as we are playing five games in eight days, ending with a tough Sussex Academy on Friday.”
