Carbon monoxide detectors required in Dewey lodgings

Unanimous decision aligns with state code, effective March 15
March 23, 2024

Dewey Beach commissioners voted unanimously March 15 to add requirements for carbon monoxide detection devices to an ordinance already mandating the installation of smoke detectors in certain conditions.

The ordinance, effective upon approval, requires the installation of battery-operated or AC-powered carbon monoxide detectors in any rooms, lodgings or sleeping accommodations furnished to transients in town for residential occupancy.

Single-station battery-operated carbon monoxide detectors are permitted if the lodging establishment was either constructed or received final approval for construction before Jan. 1, 2019, and the detection devices are installed according to the manufacturer’s specifications, the ordinance states.

Carbon monoxide detection devices are not required in a dwelling or sleeping unit if they are located more than one story above or below any story that has a fuel-burning appliance or attached garage, and if they are not connected to ductwork or ventilation shafts to any room containing a fuel-burning appliance or to an attached garage.

The changes are consistent with state code, said Commissioner Gary Persinger.

The vote comes after a unanimous recommendation from the planning and zoning commission. See the full ordinance at tinyurl.com/2y5fnxy7
