Delmarva Christian spiked by Providence Christian Academy

Royals fall 3-1
April 22, 2024

After rattling off six straight sets in the previous two matches, the Delmarva Christian boys’ volleyball team dropped the first set against Providence Christian Academy and ultimately lost 3-1 April 19 to their opponents from Elkton, Md.

Falling 25-19 in the first set, the Royals rebounded to take the second 25-11. They were unable to keep that momentum going, as they tried to figure out the visitors.

“We tried everything,” Royals coach Mike Zampini said. “We tried moving the blocks and we tried shifting our defense.”

Zampini said his players were thinking too much in the final two sets as they tried to counter Providence Christian Academy’s serves and hits.

“Volleyball, to me, is a reaction sport,” Zampini said. “Instead of trying to think everything out, just play! Know ahead of time: what's the best thing I could do with the ball when it comes to me?”

Keeping it close in the final two sets, the Royals made it interesting but fell 25-21 in the third and 25-19 in the fourth set.

The loss evens Delmarva Christian’s record at 3-3, but the boys will have a chance to collect wins when they play at Smyrna Tuesday, April 23; host Indian River Wednesday, April 24; and welcome their cross-town rival Sussex Academy Friday, April 26.
