December 20, 2023

A Georgetown man, 40, who police say fell asleep in his car at a Route 1 intersection near Lewes Dec. 19, now faces his fifth driving under the influence charge.

Delaware State Police were called at 10:25 p.m. to the intersection of Route 1 and Postal Lane for a report of a driver asleep at the wheel, police said, while several traffic light signals had passed without the vehicle moving.

Police found Shane Massey in his Jeep that was in the turn lane of the intersection, police said, and after contacting him they observed signs of impairment. After conducting standardized field sobriety tests, police took Massey into custody for DUI and transported him to Troop 7. A computer check revealed that he had been convicted of DUI on four prior occasions. He was charged with felony fifth DUI and driving with a suspended or revoked license. Massey was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $6,100 cash bond.
