Historical society to host Cannonball House restoration benefit April 20

The Lewes Historical Society will host an entertainment-filled Cannonball House Careen from 12 to 7 p.m., Saturday, April 20, at its historic campus, 110 Shipcarpenter St., Lewes.

Admission to this fundraiser is $10, and tickets can be purchased in advance at historiclewes.org/events/cannonball-house-careen.html or at the gate. Every dollar raised will go toward restoring the Cannonball House.

Guests can look forward to an enjoyable and immersive experience. Upon arrival, they will be welcomed by a team of historical interpreters, all clad in authentic early 1800s attire. Inside Sussex Tavern, they will discover a surprise – a brand-new specialty ale crafted exclusively for the occasion by Dogfish Head.

Immersive trade demonstrations will be set up throughout the campus, in addition to a maritime auction featuring original artwork and wooden boats. Exclusive merchandise will also be available for purchase. Adding to the evening’s charm will be a special performance by the Ship’s Company Chanteymen, who will regale the audience with enchanting sea shanties from 4 to 7 p.m.

In maritime terms, “careen” refers to the process of beaching a ship for hull maintenance. A comprehensive analysis by the Historic American Buildings Survey has determined that the Cannonball House requires substantial repairs and upkeep to ensure the sustainability of this beloved landmark.

Through this fundraising event, we hope to raise awareness and garner support for the preservation of the Cannonball House for future generations.
