Russ Huxtable has delivered on his commitment to provide top-notch service to his District 6 constituents. Most dramatically, after a thousand local residents assembled at Cape Henlopen High School to express concern about the proposed restaurant at Cape Henlopen State Park, Huxtable led the effort to protect the park against commercialization both now and in the future.
Huxtable took the lead in fashioning legislation and then shepherded it through to a successful conclusion in the General Assembly. This was a major task that required him to joust with DNREC and garner support in both the Senate and the House chambers. He succeeded with flying colors: Not a single vote was cast against Senate Bill 6 in either house.
Huxtable’s efforts have provided critical protection to arguably the most brilliant gem in Delaware’s natural heritage. The General Assembly renewed its four-decade-old commitment to conservation, nature education and public recreation at the park. In doing so, Delaware remained true to the Warner Grant of 1682 in which William Penn authorized Lewes and Sussex residents to benefit from the land grant’s resources.
The new law also provided additional guidance to how DNREC should administer the highly popular park, including a prohibition on restaurants, hotels and entertainment centers while protecting existing outdoor activities and programs. Finally, the law now includes a right to private action by providing a way for citizens of Sussex County to challenge DNREC policies at the park.
This is one of the many ways Russ Huxtable has delivered outstanding constituency service. He has earned the right to continue to work on our behalf.
