April is Financial Literacy Month and May ushers in Mental Health Awareness Month. Studies have shown that poverty and behavioral health concerns often are related. According to a study published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, individuals with the lowest incomes are 1.5 to 3 times more likely than the wealthy to experience anxiety and depression.

In Sussex County, approximately 9.5% of residents live in poverty. At La Red Health Center, 99% of its nearly 14,000 patients live at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines.

“Providing individuals with the knowledge and tools on how to create economic stability for themselves and their families can vastly improve not just individuals’ quality of life, but their overall health,” said Rachel Hersh, La Red Health Center’s deputy director. “We know that living in poverty is a contributing factor that can lead to chronic conditions.”

The panel discussion will focus on how panelists were able to develop the tools and knowledge to create their businesses and build their wealth. The discussion is free and open to the public.
