Lunch benefits Champions for Children’s Mental Health

Lunch With A Purpose met April 5 at Baywood Greens in support of Champions for Children’s Mental Health. The 165 attendees helped raise $4,956 in cash and $2,265 of in-kind donations, for a total of $7,221. 

In opening remarks, Cheryl Mitchell spoke about the new, state-of-the-art Food Bank of Delaware facility in Milford, With ample space for fresh and nonperishable food, the new facility includes culinary training, a cafe run by students, a garden, and a grocery pantry for people in need. Lunch With a Purpose/Coastal Delaware event attendees regularly contribute to the Food Bank with their monthly donations and have provided thousands of pounds of food.

Barbara Messick, Champions for Children’s Mental Health executive director, spoke about the organization’s efforts to support families with children who have received a mental health diagnosis. It offers trained family support providers to help families work through the mental health system. Messick, the mother of three children with mental health diagnoses, noted that funds raised in 2024 will be earmarked for its new family resource and training center. The new facility will contain a pantry for hygiene products, school supplies, a toy chest and birthday pantry.

April’s food beneficiary was the Bridgeville Food Pantry, which received 883 pounds of nonperishable donations.

The Harry K Foundation will be the beneficiary of the next event set for Wednesday, May 10, at Baywood Greens in Long Neck.
