February 3, 2024

A Milford man faces his sixth driving under the influence charge after police say someone reported a man asleep at the wheel Feb. 1 at an intersection west of Lewes.

Police responded at 9:31 p.m. to Conley’s Chapel Road and Beaver Dam Road and found Robert Fanning, 53, in the driver’s seat of a car that was in the intersection, police said, and he appeared impaired. After conducting standardized field sobriety tests, police said, Fanning was taken into custody for DUI. Police said troopers also found heroin and drug paraphernalia on Fanning. A computer check revealed that he had been convicted of DUI on five prior occasions, police said.

Fanning was transported to Troop 7 and charged with felony sixth DUI, possession of a controlled substance, and other drug and traffic charges. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3, and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of a $12,401 cash bond.
