Neighbors gather to honor late aircraft carrier commander

April 14, 2024

A local landmark on southbound Route 1 near Milford, the huge ship’s propeller in front of Meding’s Seafood is one of four that drove the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La. From 1944-45, Melvin Davidoff served as a commander on the World War II vessel

Davidoff’s daughter Susan Gershowitz is now a resident of the Tidewater Landing community outside Lewes. When her brother and sister-in-law Richard Davidoff and Susan Davidoff were visiting, they joined a group of neighbors from the Tidewater Landing community to see the propeller and honor Davidoff’s memory and his service to the country. Richard brought a framed picture of the Shangri-La to show to the group.
