Lane closures at Routes 1 and 16

There will be new lane closure hours at Route 1 and Route 16 near Milton starting Wednesday, May 1. 

Route 1 motorists can expect nighttime lane closures from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Thursday, and additional nighttime lane closures 11 pm. to 8 a.m., Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 

Route 1 motorists can expect daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday. In addition, there will be nighttime lane closures on Route 16 from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday to Friday, and from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m., Saturday and Sunday.

Lane closure hours will continue through Sept. 30. Motorists can expect to be driving in the current traffic pattern until fall 2024.  The contractor continues to work on the southbound Route 1 pavement, embankment, bridge and two ramps.  The project is anticipated to be complete in late fall 2025. Rehoboth board meets April 19

Rehoboth Beach commissioners will meet at 2 p.m., Friday, April 19, in the city hall commissioners room, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda includes consideration of two items – a license agreement for an awning to encroach over public space at Coast Hotel, and a request by Rehoboth Beach Public Library to modify deed restrictions, as well as a discussion on proposed amendments to the city charter related to the city manager, assessment of taxes and enumeration of powers.

Special Rehoboth meeting set April 19

Rehoboth Beach commissioners will hold a special meeting at 11 a.m., Friday, April 19, in the city hall commissioners room, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda includes an executive session for the purpose of conducting preliminary discussions on sales or leases of real property.

Lewes planners set to meet April 17

The Lewes Planning Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 17, at the Rollins Center. The agenda includes discussion and possible public comment on accessory dwelling units. See the full agenda and meeting link at lewes.civicweb.net.

Johnnie Walker, African American panels meet April 18

Lewes’ Johnnie Walker Beach Subcommittee will meet at 5 p.m., Thursday, April 18, at city hall.

The agenda includes discussion and possible action regarding a ground-penetrating radar study.

The Lewes African American Heritage Commission meeting will follow at 6 p.m.

Apply for Georgetown grants by April 30

The Town of Georgetown recently announced grant-funding opportunities available through the Fiscal Year 2024 Georgetown Recreation, Education, Arts Trust Fund, aka GREAT. 

Applications must be submitted on or before 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 30.

Town council established the GREAT Fund by means of a surcharge on all building permits, to allow for funding to nonprofit organizations providing recreational, educational and cultural programs for the general benefit of town citizens. 

Funding may cover specific programs, program materials or activities related to recreation, education and the arts. It will not cover capital improvements, salaries or fundraising. 

Interested nonprofit organizations may obtain the application form and general guidelines from the town website, georgetowndel.com, under News & Notices/Important Notices.

RBPD collecting expired, unwanted medications April 27

The Rehoboth Beach Police Department will participate as a collection site for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s 26th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day initiative. 

Area residents may bring their old, expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications to the police department from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 27, at 229 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach for safe disposal. Last spring, the Rehoboth Beach Police Department collected 97 pounds of unwanted prescription medications in this effort to help prevent medication misuse.

Lewes approves Savannah Road parcels annexation 

Lewes Mayor and City Council unanimously approved the annexation of three parcels located on Savannah Road that are owned by Breakwater Partners LLC. The vote at the April 8 council meeting followed the recommendation from the city’s annexation committee. Council also unanimously voted to zone the annexed parcels R-5.

Dewey approves one, denies two requests

The Dewey Beach Board of Adjustment voted April 4 to approve a front-yard setback variance and deny two side-yard setback variances requested by property owners at 1 McKinley Ave., Unit 11. 

The board said the front-yard setback request is consistent with neighboring homes, but the ungranted side-yard setback requests would not present an exceptional practical difficulty in making improvements to the home.

Women’s Club of Indian River sets info session April 18

The GFWC Women’s Club of Indian River will host an information session from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, April 18, at Nectar Café and Juice Bar, 226 Main St., Millsboro. A nonprofit organization, the club is dedicated to community improvement through volunteer service. Club members enjoy participating in projects supporting improvements in the community, establishing friendships near and far, creating new ideas and programs, and having fun at social events. Among the projects the club supports are Habitat for Humanity, I Support the Girls, Shepherd’s Office of Georgetown, food pantries, senior assisted living and rehabilitation, and arts and culture events. Members from the GFWC Women’s Club of Indian River will be on hand to share their experiences and answer any questions.
