Indian River Inlet repairs update set April 12

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host a public meeting from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Friday, April 12, at the Hyatt Place Dewey Beach, 1301 Coastal Hwy., Dewey Beach, to discuss upcoming repairs and construction at the Indian River Inlet.

The meeting will focus on a bulkhead repair along the north shoreline and sand tightening work along the south jetty. The Army Corps has awarded a contract to Agate Construction Co. of Egg Harbor Township, N.J., and work is estimated to begin later in April.

The meeting will start with an open house when attendees can view informational posters and discuss the work with Army Corps team members, followed by a presentation and Q&A session.   Free parking is available on either side of the hotel.

USACE is coordinating with Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control and the contractor on vehicular/pedestrian/trailer access to the inlet area at Delaware Seashore State Park, staging areas and other site-related issues. DNREC Division of Parks and Recreation park operations will be affected during this project.

Sussex council meeting April 9

Sussex County Council will meet at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 9, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown. Included on the agenda is a presentation from Delaware 250 Director Margaret Hughes concerning the upcoming 250th anniversary commemoration of United States and Delaware independence in 2026.

Lane closures April 9 at Old Landing Road

The Delaware Department of Transportation announced Route 1 north of Rehoboth Beach will be reduced from three lanes to two lanes in both directions, and Old Landing Road will have a single left-turn lane closure from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday, April 9 (weather permitting), for final roadway surface improvements. Rain date, if needed, will be Wednesday, April 10.

Motorists are reminded to use caution and slow down in work zones.

Lewes environmental group to meet April 8

The Lewes Planning Commission’s Environmental Subcommittee will meet at 11:30 a.m., Monday, April 8, at city hall.

Lewes housing panel to meet April 8

The Lewes Planning Commission’s Housing Subcommittee will meet at 2 p.m., Monday, April 8, at the Rollins Center.

Lewes Mayor and City Council will hold its regular monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m., Monday, April 8, at city hall.

Lewes city hall to close April 10

Lewes City Hall will close at noon, Wednesday, April 10, so city staff can take part in mandatory ALICE (alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate) training offered by Lewes Police Department.

City hall will reopen at 8 a.m., Thursday, April 11.

Lewes election board to meet April 5

Rehoboth workshop slated for April 8

Rehoboth planning commission to meet

The Rehoboth Beach Planning Commission will meet at 2 p.m., Friday, April 12, in the city hall commissioners room, 229 Rehoboth Ave.  The agenda includes a continuation of the preliminary site-plan review for the proposed Belhaven Hotel and a public hearing on the requested partitioning of 10 Columbia Ave.

Final tryout for Rehoboth Beach Patrol April 13

The Rehoboth Beach Patrol will host its final tryout for the 2024 season at 9 a.m., Saturday, April 13, at Lake Forest High School, 5407 Killens Pond Road, Felton.

Starting pay for ocean rescue personnel is $17.50/hour with an incentive bonus of up to $1,000.

To be considered for hire, all applicants will be required to take a test that includes a 1-mile run, push-ups, sit-ups, a 550-yard swim, a 100-yard sprint swim, a 25-yard underwater swim and two types of pool rescues. 

There are time completion requirements. Applicants can be 15 at the time of the tryout, but they must be 16 on or before the Memorial Day weekend, and certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid. 

Applicants also must complete the online employment application.

Trail section closed April 15-19

The Delaware Department of Transportation will be performing routine maintenance from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, April 15 through Friday, April 29, along the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail from Log Cabin Hill Road to Minos Conaway Road near Lewes. That section will be closed, and all access through the work zone will be under flagger control. The maintenance will include removal of hazardous trees adjacent to the trail and any deadwood directly above the trail. Rain date, if required, has been set for Monday, April 22.

Dewey investment committee to meet 

The Dewey Beach Investment Committee will meet at 5 p.m., Thursday, April 11, at the Lifesaving Station, 1 Dagsworthy Ave. Members will possibly vote to approve ex officio committee member Bill Stevens as chairman pro tem and to recommend a nominee for chairperson to town council. Dewey charter committee to meet

The Dewey Beach Charter and Code Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, at the Lifesaving Station, 1 Dagsworthy Ave. Members will discuss and possibly vote to recommend town commissioners add verification of professional licenses for contractors applying for business licenses. The committee may also vote to recommend amendments to business permit requirements for repairs, and on amendments to setback requirements for pools. See a full agenda at townofdeweybeach.com.
