Caucus on Aging to meet in Sussex

Sen. Spiros Mantzavinos, D-Westgate Farms, and Rep. Kendra L. Johnson, D-Bear, co-chairs of the legislative Caucus on Aging, will hold a special meeting at 1 p.m., Thursday, April 11, in Sussex County to discuss the unique challenges facing the aging population in Sussex. Topics may include access to healthcare, transportation and services available in the community.

The in-person meeting will take place at Delaware State Police Troop 7, 19444 Mulberry Road, Lewes; no virtual option is available.

The Caucus on Aging offers an opportunity for state government, private industry and nonprofit organizations to explore and develop potential means to support a full continuum of care for the aging population.

This includes initiatives that enable seniors to age successfully in their own homes and communities, and improve the accessibility and quality of long-term care facilities.

Panelists taking part in the discussions will be: Dr. David Tam, Beebe Healthcare president and CEO; Shante Hastings, Delaware Department of Transportation deputy secretary; Tom Reardon, CHEER chief operating officer; Rachel Hersh, La Red Health Center deputy director; and Robert Mauch, Sussex County Emergency Medical Services deputy director.

This event is open to the public; those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP at forms.gle/Aio9dAs3MaXSRbnU6.

Street paving to begin in Dewey

Dewey Beach Town Manager Bill Zolper said Delaware Department of Transportation was planning to start paving state-owned town streets around April 15, weather dependent.

He said paving contractor Allen Myers expects to start in the north end, going from the second block of Chesapeake Street down Bayard Avenue to the second block of Bellevue Street.

Streets that will not be paved are either town-owned or have been recently paved, Zolper said.

The contractor will put cones or barrels with “No Parking” signs on streets the day before milling/paving is to take place.

DelDOT has provided two flashing construction signs, one at Silver Lake Drive southbound entering Dewey and the other on Route 1 southbound just north of Bayard Avenue. Driveway marking will be done after the paving is completed.

The contractor must stop by Wednesday, May 1. Paving will restart after Labor Day weekend from the ocean block of Jersey Street to Collins Avenue.

As this is not a Town of Dewey Beach paving project, Zolper said all questions and concerns should be referred to DelDOT at 302-853-1330.

Dewey commissioners to meet April 12

Dewey Beach commissioners will hold a public hearing and monthly meeting at 3:30 p.m., Friday, April 12, at the Lifesaving Station, 1 Dagsworthy Ave. A public hearing and possible vote will be held on an ordinance to rezone the property at 24 Houston St. from business to residential. Commissioners may also vote on a resolution to recommend the nomination and term of service for the town alderman, to nominate the Dewey Beach Volunteer of the Year, and to appoint committee members to revise penalties for improper tree removal. Commissioners will enter a private executive session and then reconvene the public meeting to possibly vote to approve the collective bargaining agreement between FOP 22 and the Town of Dewey Beach regarding police salaries, benefits and operations.
