Rehoboth history lecture to cover Horn’s pavilion May 9

April 21, 2024

The next Rehoboth Beach History Lecture, exploring the story of Horn’s Pavilion, is set for 7:15 p.m., Thursday, May 9, in the Sussex Room at the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel. Paul Lovett, creator of the miniature village diorama of 1910 Railroad Era Rehoboth, will moderate.

The picture of Horn’s Pavilion shown was painted by Dana Pyle, a distantly connected descendant of well-known illustrator Howard Pyle. The painting of the Rehoboth Boardwalk in 1910 not only characterizes the aura surrounding the famous Horn’s Pavilion, but also captures the essence of Rehoboth’s golden age. At the peak of Rehoboth’s 85-year-long railroad era, ladies dressed up in long dresses to walk the boards and the men wore coats, ties and boater hats. The original painting by Dana Pyle is in the collection of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society.

The lecture will relate the history of Horn’s Pavilion and the family that created it. It will also cover the other unique structures that Charles Solomon Horn and his wife Anne Ritchie (Horn) built along the north side of ocean-block Rehoboth Avenue, including the Blue Hen Theater and the Royal Roller Rink. All are invited to come to the lecture and hear the stories.

A donation of $25 is requested for the lecture. Proceeds in excess of expenses will go to sustain the diorama project. To reserve a seat, call Lovett at 302-893-9391.

Attendees are encouraged to begin with dinner in the beautiful Victoria’s Restaurant next to the lecture venue. Reservations should be made for 5:30 p.m. or earlier to allow time for an enjoyable meal before the presentation begins; call 302-227-0615 to reserve dinner seats.
