Second teen charged in Sussex Central shooting

A 19-year-old Georgetown man faces charges in connection with the Feb. 27 shooting at Sussex Central High School.

Police said Gerod Sturgis was driving a Jeep Cherokee that a 15-year-old got into after shooting at another vehicle on Patriots Way outside the school. The shooting happened about 9 p.m. during a basketball playoff game, and Delaware State Police at the gym responded to the scene. Police said Howard T. Ennis School across the street from Sussex Central was hit by gunfire, and the 15-year-old now faces four felony counts of first-degree reckless endangering and one count of criminal mischief. He remains in Stevenson House Detention Center.

Sturgis was taken into custody Feb. 29 at Troop 4 where he was charged with possession of a firearm in a safe school zone, second-degree conspiracy, and felony hindering prosecution. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of a $6,000 secured bond.

There were no reported injuries from the shooting, police said.
