Soil health workshop set Aug. 16

August 7, 2023

The Delaware Soil Health Partnership will hold a workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Bridgeville Fire Hall.

Annie Dee, National Association of Conservation Districts soil health champion and president of Dee River Ranch in Pickens Co., Ala., grows corn, wheat and soybeans on 10,000 acres. Dee will discuss how using regenerative and precision practices can improve soil health and operational efficiency.

Phil King, a soil scientist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service, will discuss the importance of soil organic matter.

Jayme Arthurs, USDA NRCS state resource conservationist, will cover soil health evaluations.

Sussex Conservation District staff will discuss in-field findings and their relationship to soil health evaluations.

“These events share invaluable knowledge and insight on how producers can make their operation more sustainable and profitable,” said Debbie Absher, director of agricultural programs at Sussex Conservation District.

The event is free and lunch will be provided, with ice cream from the Vanderwende Farm Creamery truck. Producers are encouraged to bring a friend who has not attended a DSHP event in the past three years; both parties will be entered in a drawing for a chance to win a Blackstone griddle. Nutrient management credits are pending and preregistration is required.
