A 15-year-old Sussex Central student faces charges in connection with firing a gun outside the school during a DIAA tournament basketball game Feb. 27.

Troopers on duty for the first-round state tournament playoff game between Sussex Central and Cape Henlopen were notified at 8:53 p.m. of gunfire in the parking lot, police said. Police found multiple shell casings, but there were no reported injuries.

Using video surveillance footage, police said, troopers were able to identify a 15-year-old student enrolled at Sussex Central High School. Police did not give the gender of the student. Arrangements were made with the student’s parent to turn the student in at Troop 4, where the student was charged with felony possession of a firearm in a safe school zone, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, possession of a deadly weapon by persons under 18, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, and wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony. The student was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Stevenson House Detention Center in default of $82,000 secured bond.
