Young Delaware filmmakers can showcase their skills and their passion for the environment in a new contest hosted by the Sussex Preservation Coalition. The winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize.

Interested contestants, who must be Delaware residents ages 14 to 19 and currently in grades nine through 12, must register for the contest by Monday, April 8. The video submission deadline is Thursday, May 9, and winners will be announced Monday, May 20. In addition to the $1,000 first-place prize, there are prizes of $500 for second place and $300 for third place, and winners will be invited to an SPC monthly meeting for a showing of their film. Complete contest details are available at sussexpreservationcoalition.org.

“Teens are both great creators and creative consumers of video. The SPC Youth Environmental Film Contest provides an opportunity for local teens to voice their concerns and share their ideas about how to preserve and protect natural resources in Sussex County,” said Jane Gruenebaum, SPC president.

Students may work as individuals or teams and may have an adult supervisor or consultant. Students may submit up to two videos. Other submission criteria include: video length of 2:30 to 3 minutes; format – YouTube or Vimeo; topic – environmental issues in Sussex County; must be original work and must be science-based.

Contestants can review the registration form for possible ideas, but students are not limited to those topics. “The idea is to create a film on an environmental topic relevant to Sussex County and important to you,” Gruenebaum said.

SPC is a coalition of local environmental groups in Sussex County dedicated to preserving and protecting local ecosystems. Its mission is to increase the impact of groups and individuals by working together to educate, organize, advocate and act.
