Vaisakhi celebration set April 14 at Sikh Center of Delaware

April 9, 2024

The Sikh Center of Delaware will host a celebration of Vaisakhi, a traditional harvest day celebration for the Sikh and Punjabi Indian communities, Sunday, April 14, at at 1107 S. Dupont Highway, New Castle.

One of the popular features of the holiday is carefully choreographed, colorfully costumed and lively dancing known as Bhangra. Teams performing April 14 will include a group of Delaware state legislators who have been practicing under the direction of an expert tutor.

The entertainment will follow langar, the traditional free vegetarian meal fed to Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike. The meal will be served at 1:30 p.m., followed at 3 p.m. by cultural events including music and dancing.

Vaisakhi comes during April, which is being recognized for the eighth consecutive year by a concurrent legislative resolution as Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month in Delaware.

The Vaisakhi celebration is free and open to the public.
